Warm greetings from the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) Headquarters in Melaka, Malaysia!

We are pleased to circulate herewith the Outcome Document of the Fifth Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians “Promoting Sustainability, Protecting the Interests of Future Generations” that was held from 14th to 15th of December 2018 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Fifth Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians, was jointly organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the National Assembly of Azerbaijan.

This Conference brought together over 200 participants, including 130 young men and women parliamentarians from 43 different countries; 36 per cent of whom were women. Forging partnerships with a wide array of stakeholders ranging from the global to the local, the young parliamentarians were joined by representatives from governments, international organisations, civil society, youth organisations, leading academics, and the private sector.

The Outcome Document sounds the alarm on the urgency of taking legislative and oversight action to better protect the environment, promote more sustainable consumption and production practices, and to modernise education systems to ensure a smoother transition to tomorrow’s economies. The young parliamentarians also proposed concrete solutions to help make economies more agile in preparing for the tectonic technological changes we face. This Outcome Document is also available on the IPU’s website, https://www.ipu.org/event/fifth-global-conference-youngparliamentarians, along with the list of participants and all other related documents. Photos taken at the event are also available at: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmxJyFVG.

We shall count on young people and youth leaders in channeling this outcome document to the relevant stakeholders.
