World Mother Earth Day
April 22, 2022
The World Mother Earth Day is celebrated annually on 22 April and it reminds us that the Earth and its ecosystem provide us with life and sustenance. This Day provides us an opportunity to raise public awareness around the world to the challenges regarding the wellbeing of the planet and all the life it supports. Moreover, this is the first Mother Earth Day celebrated within the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
Platforms like the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Rio Declaration, and Paris Agreement do encourage international cooperation among all stakeholders on climate change education, training, awareness, participation, and access to information. Time has come for us to remind ourselves that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet.
Hence, the theme of the World Mother Earth Day is “Invest in our Planet”, and it is an opportunity for all of us to commit and act in restoring our planet and making peace with nature. We need to draw attention for immediate action to the urgency of the climate crisis and environmental degradation. Unless every country in the world steps up, we are consigning current and future generations to a dangerous future. It is time to promote harmony with nature and the Planet!
We, at the World Assembly of Youth (WAY), believe that the World Mother Earth Day is a chance to reaffirm our collective responsibilities in order to promote harmony with nature at a time when our planet is under threat from climate change, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, infection diseases, and other man-made problems. Young people should take up the responsibility by increasing efforts, raising awareness, and taking initiatives. Environmental and climate literacy is the engine not only for creating green voters and advancing environmental and climate laws and policies but also for accelerating green technologies and jobs. It is time for youth to invest in efficiency and renewable energy and begin to solve the climate crisis.
The World Mother Earth Day serves as yet another opportunity to prompt mankind to step up to these responsibilities and reflect on biodiversity and environmental protection. Let us show the close relationships between human, animal, and environmental health.
